Tools to happiness – one step at a time

I have something special coming here on the blog in the next few days. Several people have graciously given permission to use their stories to help understand some of the basic lessons taught with the free tools gift available on the site.

The first example comes from a former coaching client turned friend who contacted me during the move of the list lately to tell me his story.

In a way, his story is very similar to many I have heard.

How many times are we given (often for free) tools, tips and techniques to do whatever it is that we want to do?

Then how many times do we NOT act or use those tools?

My client, let’s call him Paul, had called me looking for some life direction. He was drifting a bit, not happy in what he was doing, not making enough money, going through a divorce, and fighting for custody of a child.

One of the first things we worked on was his definition of success and his values. These exercises are crucial to being able to create the life you want.

How would you ever be able to create your life if you do not define the life that you want?

Defining what success is for you and defining your top four values allows you a clear platform from which to make decisions. We must understand that all the individual choices and decisions we make each and every day all add up to the creation of our lives.

Paul worked hard on his definitions and made some hard choices based on those definitions to begin to crawl out of the hole he felt he was in.

And he did crawl out. When we ended our official coaching agreement, Paul had made some great strides in self confidence, focus, and understanding the process to achieving his stated goals.

So what happened between then and when he wrote me last week?

Let’s go though that tomorrow!

Happy but tired!

I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who has written to me in response to moving the email list to a new server.

It is so nice to hear from you!

There are a couple of emails I have asked permission to share here as they have much to say to how happiness and success can be found.

Look for them very soon!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have helped my day be that much happier!

Most of the dirty work is done and it loks like it is going to work!

People are unhappy with me!

Well I am sorry. It is impossible to make everyone happy. In fact, if they would only read what I write they would realize I cannot make them happy anyway!

What has happened is after several emails, and articles doing my best to let everybody know I was moving my email list management to a new (better in this case) software, I sent out notification this morning asking if you would click on a link – that is all- just click on the link to verify you wanted to receive articles and newsletters from me. I even offered a gift for a click!

Some people, who we will leave unnamed, have complained that clicking a link is too much trouble.

Sorry.

But you will be missing out. I have been working a lot of hours for a long time to build something I felt would help a whole lot of people.

See I think we are in the middle of the greatest transformation the world has ever seen! But because we are smack dab in the middle of it – we can’t see it. Well I can.

I am not bragging – I am just different I guess. Different up bringing, different lifestyle, different way of thinking. Maybe that is why I see it and you don’t.

Not to worry mate! I am here to help.

At any rate, for those of you who are too troubled to click a link, we’ll miss you! And we hope you find happiness from someone else!

For those who have clicked the link, and there are a lot of you, thanks so very much for trusting me and allowing me the priviledge of communicating with you.

I am honored. And I promise to do my utmost to keep that trust.

Finding happiness in the news

Skimming through the articles this morning finds not much of interest or unusual or exciting about happiness.

I definitely see a pattern emerging of the scientific community jumping on board the find happiness bandwagon with research, documentation and books galore. Most do not give any specifics, just facts on how to find happiness.

Well for sure facts certainly make me happy! Right.

Here is the deal. Happiness takes work. I know –  who needs more work?

The work I am talking about is change, and sometimes that is the hardest work of all. Nobody wants to change! Especially as we get older and set in our ways.

Unfortunately, being set in our ways is exactly what can make us unhappy. Bcoming bored with life is easy to do when life is a routine. We must break that routine and do different (sometimes radically different) things.

Which of course takes action instead of procrastination.

For instance at 51, gravity is doing its best to move my chest to my stomach area. I am one of the lucky ones who never changes weight (I weigh the same as I did in high school) but it is shifting. I also have not exercised much lately which means I feel much less active and feel much more the aches and pains associated with years of physical activities like rugby, sailing and clearing land for our horse farm.

So – radical action! I joined an over 40 soccer team! I have changed old aches and pains for new ones. However I am meeting some interesting people, rearranging the body movement caused by gravity and too much sitting around, and maybe most importantly – having fun!

Because having fun translates into happiness.

Just one way I am finding happiness today.
